Here’s an example:  A San Francisco California dentist may pay his dental assistant $40,000 a year versus only $6000 a year that a Mexico or Bangkok dentist pays for his assistant.  The SF dentist’s clinic rent could be $5000 a month vs. $5,000 a year for a clinic locale in Cabo San Lucas Mexico or Manila Philippines. So, a Mexico dentist or dentist in Manila will charge 40-75% less than American dentists for the same treatments using the same materials and equipment as American dentists because they have less fixed overhead.
 
Other factors include the lower cost of housing and that many governments subsidize medical education, thus new dentists in these countries are not burdened with a mountain of dental school debt on graduation.  Mexico for instance, requires new dental school grads to perform a year of public service in a government clinic before going into private dental practice or continuing with additional dental specialist school.

 

Costs of Dental Implants, Mexico and elsewhere - Many dentists in Mexico  and Latin America advertise implants for $800- $1,500 or so - that's for the abutment without the crown or for a non-brand (often made in China) implant that lasts only 6-10 years and can come loose, deteriorate or cause an allergic reaction. A high quality dental implant made by Nobel, Imtec or a similar quality brand, with a crown set by a dentist in Mexico or anywhere in Latin America should cost in the range of $2,000 to $2,300usd.  And it will last 20 years to a lifetime. Be wary of One-day implants and synthetic veneers. They have high failure rates and many dental professionals won't use them. We especially don't recommend them for the dental tourist who has to travel long distances for dental work. Quality porcelain metal crowns or 100% porcelain will cost from $475-650 at dentists in Mexico, Latin America and Asia dental clinics vs. $800 - $3,000 in the US. Synthetic veneers are not strong enough for molars, can chip, and eventually permit stains to seep up under the veneer causing discoloration. AMD dentists do not recommend products like Lumineers etc.

Cosmetic dentistry in Mexico and in many other countries (the USA excepted) is a recognized dental specialty that takes 2-4 more years of additional specialist school training including studies in periodontics - for gum line re-contouring etc., oral surgery for dental implants, sinus lifts, and bone grafts. Design and balance of the teeth, tooth color matching, making sure the new dental makeover teeth are set properly and not too crowded, and more, are important for major dental work such as dental makeovers, dental implants and mini-implant secured dentures.

Our rule of thumb on dental pricing - Our many years of experience in working with dentists in developing nations has shown us that when dentists  charge less than $450-650usd for a root canal or 100% porcelain crown (as of Dec. 2012), the patient usually encounters clinics with 15-20 year-old equipment, poorer facilities or locations, the use of non-branded materials resulting in crowns that come off due to inferior cements, inferior implants that don't last, and general dentists posing as specialists who never attended specialist schools. With an AMD Board Certified Dentist - you are guaranteed you will not be treated by an under-qualified general dentist trying to learn specialist procedures at your expense.  Always insist on a Board Certified Special Dentist in Mexico - they cost the same as general dentists in Mexico, and you get the safety and quality work you deserve for your money.
